Well, here’s why Gil should be thankful that Gertrude Stein wound up reading it instead. When Hemingway sent his manuscript for A Farewell to Arms to his frenemy F. Scott Fitzgerald, that cocky Mr. Hemingway responded to Fitzgerald’s closing praise with “Kiss my ass” — circled, and with a little mocking picture, no less. A farewell to manners, indeed.
