Possums Prove Impossible for New Australian Prime Minister

Stefan Postles/Getty Images(CANBERRA, Australia) -- An infestation of possums has prevented Australia's new prime minister from moving into his official residence.

The U.K.'s Telegraph reports Prime Minister-Elect Tony Abbott was to move to The Lodge, a 1920s colonial-style 40-room mansion in Canberra, but the structure is in serious disrepair, and its current
residents -- possums -- have led to embarrassing near-international incidents.  Last year, for instance, urine from the marsupials began seeping from the ceiling onto a priceless painting during an official state visit.

Abbott, a conservative who was swept into power in a landslide last week, reportedly refused an offer to stay in a $2,800-a-night rental suite while the residence is being restored, and will instead be staying in a modest residence where police recruits live.
